New Delhi against sanctions on Russia
New Delhi: Having backed Russia which has annexed Crimea from Ukraine, India has said that it will not be supporting “unilateral measures” like the sanctions being imposed against the Russian government.
The US and the European Union (EU) have imposed sanctions on several officials from Russia and the Ukraine who are accused of involvement in Moscow’s actions in the Black Sea peninsula.
Australia too announced on Wednesday that it will impose financial and travel sanctions on a dozen political figures from the Ukraine and Russia who it believes have been instrumental in the Russian threat to Ukraine sovereignty, it said.
“Australia has taken these actions in solidarity and support for a rules-based international order,” Indian foreign ministry said.
New Delhi’s grounds for not supporting the sanctions is that India does not support unilateral sanctions against any country. It cites the examples of Iran and Iraq against whom it has not supported unilateral sanctions in the past.
As western nations continue to be ranged against Russia, the latter itself has said that these sanctions are unacceptable and even threatened consequences if these are imposed.
