EC said the entire responsibility would be on the candidate
Hyderabad: The Election Commission has made it clear that newspaper managements and reporters would not be held responsible for paid news articles in the media.
Speaking to the media at a workshop conducted by the EC on paid news articles, EC director Akshay Rout said the entire responsibility would be on the candidate. Once the committee on paid news at the district level concludes that a particular news item is a paid article the candidate will be given notice and the news item will be treated as an advertisement.
The candidate will be asked to include the cost of advertisement in his/her election expenditure. Mr Rout, however, appealed to the media to help the EC in curbing the paid news menace which he said is a covert operation.
