Researchers at Facebook have built a face-recognition algorithm called DeepFace. The algorithm is so accurate that it can pick a face from millions of faces in the database with an accuracy of almost 97.25 per cent.
NewsScientist reported that most face recognition systems have a common problem that they cannot recognize a face properly if it is off-centered. To encounter this issue, the researchers at the Facebook AI lab found a way. They created a 3D model of a face from a photo that can be rotated 360 degrees and best positioned so that the algorithm can start matching.
The team achieves 97.25 per cent accuracy on a test bed, which consisted of 13,000 images of faces collected from around the web. The result percentage is just short of what humans can detect, which was researched at 97.5 per cent.
The next question arises is ‘what will Facebook do with face recognition?’ Well, they can identify all your friends and automatically tag them in your photos.
