Renovated Meenakshi temple tower consecration on Wednesday

The 150-feet tall tower, built in 1216 AD, suffered damage when lightning struck it in December in 2013

Madurai: The consecration of the East Tower of ancient Sri Meenakshi Amman temple here, renovated after it suffered damage in lightning over three months ago, would be held on Wednesday.

The 150-feet tall tower, built in 1216 AD, suffered damage when lightning struck it in December last year. A sculpture of a yali (a legendary animal) was totally ripped off under the impact of the lightning.

Temple Executive officer and Joint Commissioner B Jayaraman said the damage would have been on a largescale but for the lightning arrester which diverted lightning surges to the ground.

The repair work of the tower was taken up on December 19 last the Fit person and Chairman of the temple Karumuthu T.Kannan monitored the entire work to ensure that the beauty of the Yali sculpture was maintained.

A Simple consecration ceremony would be held at the special Yaga salai set up for the purpose, Jayaraman said.
