Bayern Munich proposes Karl Hopfner as new club president

Hoeness stepped down Friday after being convicted of evading millions of euros

Munich: Bayern Munich's board of management has nominated Karl Hopfner as the club's new president to replace Uli Hoeness, who resigned after a tax scandal.

The 61-year-old Hopfner is currently vice president and a member of the executive committee of the supervisory board, and is the only candidate ahead of a vote at an extraordinary general members' assembly in Munich called for May 2.

The club says Rudolf Schels is nominated as vice president and Dieter Maier as second vice president. Board chairman Edmund Stoiber says "we're convinced the proposed men will ensure the unity of Bayern Munich and continuity of the club leadership."

Hoeness stepped down Friday after being convicted of evading millions of euros (dollars) in tax through an undeclared Swiss bank account. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
