Kejriwal in Mumbai: Train ride irks Mumbaikars, adds to chaos
Mumbai: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal launched his party’s Lok Sabha campaign here on Wednesday with an autorickshaw ride, train ride, and roadshows. He drew crowds, but also set off more than the usual chaos on Mumbai’s crowded streets.
Taking an autorickshaw from the airport to Andheri station, Mr Kejriwal set off a chase on the streets as others tried to follow his vehicle. His followers packed other autorickshaws, that are allowed three passengers at most. The authorities imposed Rs 500 fines on three autorickshaw drivers.
From Andheri station, Mr Kejriwal boarded a packed second class compartment in an Andheri local at 11.26 am with his supporters. The crush went out of control as he reached Churchgate. Two metal detectors at platform one were knocked over, and a few commuters suffered minor injuries.
Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil said, “There is law in Maharashtra that says the cost of damage to public property shall be recovered from those responsible. We will assess if the damage done today was accidental or deliberate.”
Mr Kejriwal took out a roadshow from the historic August Kranti Maidan to Khilafat House.
