Special voter registration drive fetches 65,000 new voters

There are presently 35.98 lakh voters in Hyderabad district

Hyderabad: The voters’ list of Hyderabad district is all set to swell as 65,000 new applications were received as part of a special drive conducted to enroll voters on Sunday. This is in addition to 1.83 lakh applications already received by the officials for enrolment since January 31 when the first supplement of draft electoral rolls was published.

Officials have completed the scrutiny of almost all the 1.83 lakh applications and are in the process of completing the procedure for the 65,000 new applications.

“There could be duplications and some deletions. The second supplement of the voters’ list with the names of the new voters will be published soon. People who have not registered their names on the voters’ list, but aspire to cast their votes in the ensuing Assembly and Lok Sabha elections still have the chance of making it to the list. For this purpose, the voter registration should be completed by
March 31
,” said GHMC special commissioner and district election authority, Rahul Bojja.

As on date, there are 35.98 lakh voters in Hyderabad district covering 15 Assembly constituencies and two Parliamentary constituencies, in addition to one Assembly segment of Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituencies. Even, the number of polling booths are likely to go up from the present 3,091 as the Election Commission norms state that there should be 1400 voters in each booth.

Over 30,000 employees from various government departments are being drawn for election duties and as many as 16,000 new EVMS will be in place for polling. Web cameras will be installed in all the polling booths and the election process will be monitored constantly.

GHMC commissioner, Somesh Kumar, special commissioner, Rahul Bojja and additional commissioner (elections), K. Siva Parvathi, said that a control room was being set up to monitor complaints pertaining to violation of poll code.

Regarding complaints that there was a problem in online registration in the voters’ list, officials said that it would be rectified soon.
