One killed as water war turns political

In the tense run-up to the elections, a quarrel over water on Monday escalated into a clash between the Congress and TD activists

SRIKAKULAM: In the tense run-up to the elections, a quarrel over water on Monday escalated into a clash between the Congress and TD activists.

One person, TD activist Pilla Ramanayya, 55, was killed and 12 others were injured in the clash at Sumanthapuram in L.N. Peta mandal, police said. The clash erupted when some TD activists stopped a woman who was going to fetch water from a borewell. Congress activists retaliated by stopping a milk van belonging to a Desam activist.

As tempers flared, both sides pelted stones and attacked each other with sticks. Ramanayya, who was injured in the clash, was taken to a Amudalavalasa government area hospital where he died. The police has posted a picket at the village to avoid further violence said Amudalavalasa inspector N. Vijayanand.
