Livr, the new hoax online

The newest entrant is an app that targets people who are under the influence of alcohol — Livr

We’ve seen some strange apps come up in the past. The newest entrant in the market is an app that targets people who are under the influence of alcohol — Livr. To use the app, you need to first unlock it using a Breathalyser extension that comes with the product.

Detractors have said that the use of the Breathalyser to activate the product will only result in increased public drunkenness and might even promote drunk driving. Others say that having a Breathalyser handy will actually reduce incidences of drunk driving.

But, Livr is a hoax. Just doing some cursory research shows that the founders have no social media presence whatsoever, and some further research found that the CTO who claims to be a “tech ninja” is, in fact, a comedian. Not surprising, that the App was named after the organ most affected by excessive alcohol consumption.

Now this wouldn’t usually be interesting, except that people have spent a lot of time and money to come up with the marketing materials and website for the product, which looks impeccably professionally made and that this is the second big hoax online in the past few days after Huvr, which managed to get pro-skater Tony Hawk and members of the cast of Back To The Future to advertise for a real life hoverboard.

Are the same people responsible for both the hoaxes? It’s difficult to tell. But, whenever you read something that’s too good to be true, take it with a pinch of salt, it just might be.
