I hope to get a sponsor by end of this month: Rashid Khan

Rashid's win over Siddikur Rahman has helped him get the recognition he deserved

New Delhi: He has just set the course a blaze with his maiden Asian Tour victory and buoyed by the breakthrough triumph, talented Indian golfer Rashid Khan is now hoping to ink a good sponsorship deal which would lend wings to his bigger dreams.

The 23-year-old last week completed a memorable wire-to-wire victory in the SAIL-SBI Open in New Delhi, the biggest of his career. To go with that, he currently tops the Asian Tour Order of Merit besides clinching the numero uno spot on the PGTI Order of Merit in 2013.

The city-based golfer has won four PGTI tournaments. "I am in touch with sponsors and I hope it will be finalised by the end of March. If it happens it will be very good. Otherwise, I will have to pay from my pocket," Rashid said after the launch of The Delhi NCR Cup in New Delhi on Friday.

His recent exploits at his home course, Delhi Golf Club (DGC), where he claimed a play-off victory over Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman, has helped him get the recognition he deserved. "This Asian Tour win has changed life a bit, it has made me well-known, they now know me. I had said last year itself that I would play in the Asian Tour."

Rashid is gearing up to compete in four tournaments next month, including two PGTI events and the Maybank Malaysian Open. Asked about the triumph at DGC, he said, "It feels amazing. It's my home course and winning here is very, very special." Rashid's maiden Asian Tour victory was worth USD 54,000.
