Sushma Swaraj unhappy over BSR Congress merger with BJP in Karnataka

Sushma Swaraj opposed the re-entry of Sriramulu and the controversial Reddy brothers in BJP

New Delhi: With former Karnataka minister B. Sriramulu announcing his party BSR Congress’ merger with the BJP in a latest move, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj has made her opposition known to the reentry of Mr Sriramulu and the controversial Reddy brothers of Bellary in the saffron fold.

She had also opposed Haryana heavyweight and former Congress leader Venod Sharma associating himself with the BJP-led NDA. When former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was reinducted into the BJP despite opposition from senior leader L.K. Advani and Ms Swaraj, sources disclosed, Ms Swaraj had categorically told the BJP top brass that the Reddy brothers should not be brought back.

“I am opposed to the BSR alliance or merger with BJP in Karnataka. I have conveyed to Shri Rajnath Singhji in writing that BJP must not permit this,” Ms Swaraj tweeted, reacting to media reports.

All along, Ms Swaraj was targeted for being the “mentor” of the controversial Reddy brothers. In the changed political scenario, there is a need for the BJP to rope in all kinds of support, including Mr Sriramulu who has substantial clout in Karnataka, which the BJP lost to the Congress. The Reddy brothers had quit the BJP after G. Janardhana Reddy was implicated in the mining scam. They floated the BSR Congress under the leadership of their confidant, B. Sreeram-ulu, in 2012.
