Drunk driving checks now on weekdays too
Hyderabad-Drunk drivers will not have it easy on weekdays henceforth. The traffic police is planning to intensify law enforcement against drunk drivers even on weekdays. Checks on drunk drivers were earlier limited to weekends. Now, checks will be conducted at different places in the city on a particular day every week.
Drunken driving checks are generally conducted on weekends for party revelers. However, with the number of drunk driving cases refusing to come down, the police has decided to intensify enforcement. Surprise checks were conducted on Monday last week at two different places in the city, and the police observed a marked increase in the number of cases booked with just two teams. Officials said a weekday would be chosen at the start of every week and two traffic police teams will be dispatched to conduct surprise checks.
“We will decide on the day to conduct surprise checks and only at 9 pm on that day, police teams will be informed of their checkpoints. Two police teams will be deputed for the checks,” a senior police official said.
The police also said that the surprise check last Monday saw 25 cases of drunken driving being booked by just two teams. On an average, on weekends, about 270 cases are booked on two days by several police teams.
"The place of the checks also counts. We will have to see in future how many cases are booked," the official said.
Police had tried this several months ago but had dropped the idea. But it was revived after Jitender took over as additional commissioner of police (traffic). This year already 2,127 cases have been booked for drunken driving and 340 of them were imprisoned.
