The youngest diva of playback singing

'My mother is my guru, I don’t take any formal training' says Diva

Five-year-old Diva Roy is the youngest playback singer of Bollywood who has made herself heard in the song Bawla Sa Sapna in the film Shaadi Ke Side Effects.

Music runs in Diva’s family — her mother Pritha Majumdar has sung in films such as Veer Zaara, Mohabbatein and Vastaav to name a few.

Rajesh Roy, Diva’s father is a music composer who has worked in several Hindi and Bengali films. Initially, Pritam, who has composed music for the film, wasn’t too sure about using Diva’s voice.

But when he started the recording with the child artiste, her talent surprised him. We hear that the whole song was recorded in one day and the quality was superb. After it was done, Pritam told her, “You are rocking, Diva”.

Even though she is all of five, Diva is quite eloquent. We ask her how did she land a chance to sing in the film and she says, “Pritam uncle was looking for a child to sing in the film. My mother’s friend, Arunita aunty, told us about it and introduced us to him. My mother sent him a few of my recorded songs that I had sung at home. He liked them and finalised me.”

Diva says she was only two-and-a-half years old when she started to sing. “I used to hum along with my mother while she would do her riyaaz at home. That’s how it all began.” As of now, she is not taking any formal training in music.

“My mother is my guru. I don’t take any formal training. I like to sing with my mom. I love to sing. I sing songs after listening to them on television,” says Diva, whose current favourite track is Titli from Chennai Express.
