Court bans dance programme at Tamil Nadu temple fest

The petition sought permit for cultural dance programmes at temple festivals

Chennai: The Madras High Court dismissed a batch of petitions which sought directions to the police to permit cultural dance programmes at temple festivals in Namakkal, Erode, Salem and Vellore districts.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian dismissed the petitions from D. Veerappan and 36 others, which sought directions to the respective inspectors of police to grant permission to them to conduct dance programmes on the occasion of the festival of local temples.

The judge said the petitioners had not cited any enactment that confers a right upon them to hold dance programmes in public places near temples.
