Quirk Rules the Frames
The latest trend in sunglasses is to break away from conventional styles and sport the ‘weird’

With summer knocking on our doors, the one accessory that everyone’s going to be reaching out for is sunglasses. Besides the classic picks like wayfarers and aviators, the latest trend points at the quirky. All the recent fashion weeks, whether in Milan or Paris, have been swept by the rage of the colourfully framed trendy Fendi sunglasses in various shapes. Closer home too, the city seems to have a hankering for the over-the-top yet uber cool.
“Sunglasses are a great statement accessory,” points out city stylist Shravya Verma, adding, “Even in Hyderabad, people are ready for something bolder. In fact, the Lady Gaga sunglasses, like the singer herself, are quite unique and trendsetting.” Right now, many students can be seen sporting sunglasses in different colours and frames. “Many are now breaking away from conventional colours and even opting for what was earlier thought to be ‘weird’,” Shravya notes.
Of course, experts caution about stealing the attention away from frames. “If you want to wear quirky sunglasses, then keep the rest of it simple. A good idea is to complete the look with a high pony or a simple t-shirt,” Neeraja Kona suggests. There are favourites every year, and this time everyone seems to have taken a fancy to the John Lennon or Gandhi glasses, which was a trend in the 90s too. “There was a time when aviators were everyone’s favourite. Then last year it changed to the wayfarers, which is still my favourite pick. Wearing quirky sunglasses have more to do with wanting to follow an international trend than actually being comfortable in them,” says fashion designer Ankita D.
City stylist Arshad Mazhar tells you what to look out for this season. “The favourites this season are the horn-rimmed glasses, while the dual tone and mirrored glasses are making a grand comeback,” he informs.
Arshad adds a few dos and don’ts to the list: “This summer go for dark colours and avoid the large frame glasses. Choose a frame that’s proportionate to the shape of your face and colours like vibrant blue will work wonders for someone with a wheatish complexion, while dark shades like green and black are better for the fair skinned,” he says.
