Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh has come under President’s Rule after 41 years. The Union Cabinet which met in Delhi on Friday decided to impose President’s Rule in the state as recommended by the state Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.
After the Cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde met President Pranab Mukherjee and briefed him about the Cabinet decision. Union minister Jairam Ramesh made the announcement to the media in Delhi. He also said that the Cabinet has taken a decision to place the state Assembly under suspended animation, but he doesn’t know for how long. The term of the state Assembly was slated to end on June 2, 2014.
The Centre is waiting for the approval of the President to issue a notification on President’s Rule. The President of India issues a notification imposing President Rule in the state under Article 356(1) of the Constitution of India. Article 356(1) reads: “If the President, on receipt of report from the Governor of the state or otherwise, is satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the government of the state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution he can impose President’s Rule in the state”. The state was under President’s Rule for 335 days from January 11, 1973, when P.V. Narasimha Rao was the Chief Minister, following the breakdown of law and order due to the Jai Andhra agitation.
