Defence Minister was warned of drop in submarine strength

Critics point out that despite the warning, the Union government and the defence ministry have done little on this front to resolve the issue

New Delhi:The confidential defence report of the Union government in 2012 had warned of the lowest ever submarine force levels by 2015 and a highly vulnerable and precarious situation with grave implications for national security.
The confidential defence report had stated that the country would have just about five to six submarines left in service by 2015.

“It is time for the Indian Navy to openly accept that the submarine arm of the nation has never before been poised in such a vulnerable situation with regard to operational availability and strength. The submarine force is currently at a highly precarious state, demanding urgent attention of the defence ministry,” the report had noted.
