IPL betting: TN suspends top cop

IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar had deposed before the Mukul Mudgal committee constituted by the SC to probe IPL betting scam.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government o Friday suspended senior IPS officer G Sampath Kumar for allegedly making charges against his colleagues in the context of IPL match fixing scam.

Kumar, who is currently posted as Superintendent, Government Railway Police in Tiruchi has been placed under suspension, a top police official told PTI but refused to elaborate the reasons for the disciplinary action.

Kumar, while deposing before the SC appointed Justice Mukul Mudgal committees, is believed to have told the panel that state police officers avoided investigating the match-fixing angle to the May 12, 2013, IPL tie between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

However, Kumar, who was part of the IPL betting racket investigation, had come under the scanner in the wake of allegations by an arrested bookie who made certain charges against the official.

There was speculation that CB-CID chief Narinderpal Singh had written to DGP K Ramanujam recommending Kumar's suspension and his custodial interrogation.
