Hospital blamed for death after stent op

n Patient died when he came for his follow-up check-up.

Hyderabad: A 45-year-old man, A. Raja Ram, died of a massive heart attack on Thursday morning after a stent operation allegedly went wrong at Sigma Hospital. Ram, an RMP from Kuntala district in Nizamabad, had been referred to the Sigma Hospital by the Nizamabad district hospital doctors as he was suffering from chest pains. The stent operation was carried out on February 9 and Ram was discharged after three days as he responded well to the treatment.
However, on February 24, when he returned for his follow-up check-up, the cardiologist and medical director of Sigma Hospitals Dr K.K. Reddy was out of town. As Ram was leaving the hospital with his wife and son, he started having severe chest pains. The para-medical staff rushed to help and re-admitted him in the hospital. Admission was not a problem since he had been treated under Aarogyasri. The patient was directly shifted to the ICU and emergency care was given.
His son, A. Srinivas, said, “The senior doctor never came to see my father. Duty doctors attended to him, but no one gave any explanation for the chest pain after the stent operation. On Thursday morning, there was chaos as nurses ran in and out. We got worried since they said that he was having a major attack. The duty doctor tried, but my father was gone.”
The family demanded to know the reason for the absence of the senior doctor, and the duty doctor claimed that he was out of town for the last three days and would not be available. The hospital Aarogyasri centre took the complaint of the relatives and the body was sent for a post-mortem. A case of negligence has been registered.
Investigating officer of Gopalapuram,S. Ramachandra Reddy said, “All the medical records from the hospital have been collected and will be sent along with the post-mortem report to the medical council for further action.” Despite repeated attempts, Dr K.K. Reddy was not available for comment.
