Defoe retained by England, Shaw gets first call-up

Luke Shaw has been called up for the first time ahead of the World Cup.

London: Jermain Defoe has retained in his place in the England squad for the friendly against Denmark despite his impending move to Canada, and Southampton defender Luke Shaw has been called up for the first time ahead of the World Cup.

Defoe has appeared in just two Tottenham games in two months before heading to FC Toronto for the start of the Major League Soccer season in March. The striker has been selected at the expense of West Ham's Andy Carroll.

The 18-year-old Shaw has a chance to stake his claim for a place in the World Cup squad in next Wednesday's game, the last before Hodgson names his players to take to Brazil.
