Chennai: Sachin Tendulkar, known to put fear in the minds of all the bowlers of his time, admits that writing a love letter to his wife Anjali was quite a daunting task before the couple got married. In the city to launch Writewiz, an initiative to promote good handwriting among students by a pen manufacturer, he says his first memories of writing came from watching his writer-father write poetry. “Before mobile phones, the only way one would communicate to loved ones were through letters. First, I wrote to my family and I later started writing to Anjali. At times, Anjali had to plan and send letters to me based on where I would be when the letters reached. I did not write many letters but I really treasure the few that I have,” he said.
When asked about who in the Indian team had the best handwriting, he said, “I remember Anil (Kumble) writing very neatly. Also, Subroto Banerjee had quite beautiful handwriting.” Speaking about his children he said, “Like all kids, mine Sarah and Arjun would write on our walls and we never stopped them from doing it. As they grew taller, their scribbles too reached higher up on the walls and when people would ask, I would tell them that we had two budding artists living here.”
While questions were limited to the event, Sachin did confess that he hadn’t played much cricket after retirement. “I have not played with a season ball at all, but I did once play a bit with Arjun at home. It was a lot of fun and I’m thoroughly enjoying spending time with my family,” the batting wizard said. He added that his autobiography was in the works but refrained from divulging any details.
