Salman Khurshid firm on ‘impotent’ comment
New Delhi: As the BJP demanded an apology from external affairs minister Salman Khurshid for describing BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi as impotent in the context of the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, the minister stood by his remarks. Mr Khurshid had said this while addressing a rally in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, from where he is expected to recontest the Lok Sabha elections.
While it immeditately set off a huge controversy, on Wednesday he insisted he had done nothing wrong as there was no other word to describe the BJP leader in the context of 2002 riots. Mr Modi, he said, must admit the "truth" and clarify if he was either in a position to stop the riots or not.
Mr Khurshid remarked, "I am not his doctor. I cannot physically examine him. So I have no business to be saying what his physical condition is. The word ‘impotent’ is used in political vocabulary to show that somebody is incapable of doing something."
He also lashed out at the Mr Modi over his handling of the riots, and said he couldn’t find any other words to express his anguish better.
