Andhra polls as per schedule, says Digvijay Singh
Hyderabad: AICC general secretary and state Congress affairs incharge Mr Digvijay Singh has informed leaders of the state Congress that Assembly elections in the state would be held as per the schedule along with the Lok Sabha polls. Several Seemandhra and Telangana leaders met Mr Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday. While the Seemandhra Congress leaders wanted the Assembly polls to be postponed for at least six months, the Telangana leaders wanted the elections as per schedule since the Telangana electorate would vote for the Congress for facilitating the bifurcation.
The Telangana leaders felt that if the elections were postponed, the Telangana issue might not remain a poll issue and people might change their opinions. The Seemandhra Congress leaders, meanwhile, said that if the polls were postponed, people’s anger over the bifurcation might come down by then and they might become neutral. PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana had also suggested to the AICC leaders to delay elections by six months.
Congress senior leader and Rajya Sabha member T. Subbirami Reddy and minister Kondru Murali met Mr Singh on Tuesday. Speaking to the media later, Mr Subbirami Reddy said that there was hardly any chance of the elections being postponed in the state. He, however, added that if the state was divided before the polls, then Assembly elections in the two states might be postponed. Mr Murali said the Centre had announced a good package for Seemandhra and if the Assembly elections were postponed, they would then get some time to take the Centre’s package to the people.
