‘Same job’ couples
Want to date or marry a Harvard graduate who is going places? Then ensure that you have qualifications and a career to match or rival them.
From the ever-increasing pressure at work to the fun that they do not want to give up after marriage, most people these days are settling down with someone from the same ‘arena’, or at least the mindset.
A recent study in the United States claims that in the year 2005, 48 per cent married men with university degrees had tied the knot with a fellow graduate, up from 25 per cent in 1960. For women, the figure was 44 per cent, an increase of 11 per cent.
In India too, there are TV stars settling down with someone who is professionally compatible.
Singer Hemachandra, who is married to another singer, Bhargavi, explains: “It is an amazing feeling as we even get to work together. Thanks to all the shows we have, we get to travel around the world, together.”
Naveena Yelamanchi, director of Kaakateeya Marriages says, “Youn-gsters are mostly looking for a partner who will agree to settle in the same city as them. Also, somebody from the same background would understand work pressure. Financial stability and education are also important factors. They don’t want to marry someone who is way over-qualified or under-qualified in comparison to them.”
For the recently married Nach Baliye couple, Sargun Mehta and Ravi Dubey, being from the same professional background has helped. “I don’t need to explain anything to Ravi as he knows how shoots are. We adjust with each other.”
It is the same case for another TV couple, Vivian Dsena and Vahbbiz Dorabjee. “The understanding is better. If I had married someone from a different background, I would’ve had to explain many things. My wife is very accommodating,” says Vivian.
