Jayalalitha to fight legal challenge by centre

J. Jayalalithaa on Monday asserted that her government would legally counter the Centre’s attempt to stall the release of convicts.

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday asserted that her government would legally counter the Centre’s attempt to stall the release of convicts involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Her government’s stand will be disclosed in the counter to be filed by it before the Supreme Court on a review petition moved by the Centre challenging her government’s decision on releasing all the seven convicts. Talking to reporters during her 66th birthday celebrations, Ms Jayalalithaa said, "Whatever we will do legally cannot be disclosed to the media. Whatever we want to say will be said in the court thro-ugh our counsel."

"The matter is sub judice and we should not discuss what is in the court," she said when sought for her reaction to the Congress terming her decision to release the convicts "politically motivated."
