It's selfies vs braggies' now

Moving past selfies, social networking sites are now flooded with braggies'. But, these photos can also provide information about new places

It’s time we move past selfies. They’re very passé now. So what’s picking up now you ask? Braggies. And what exactly are braggies? Braggies is the term used for photos that people or vacationers upload of places they travel to usually to boast. From exotic places, posing with exotic animals, to photos on yachts and much more, you are bound to have at least one such friend on your list who could be a potential ‘bragger’. And if you still don’t believe us then you should probably take a look at celebs like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and closer home Priyanka Chopra, Nargis Fakhri and many others.

But is it all just about bragging? While there are many who would believe that it isn’t about bragging, newcomer in Tollywood, Ajay Manthena, doesn’t mince words, “I love travelling and as an actor I travel quite often. So yes, I love uploading photos. I do know it’s bragging in a way, but it’s fun to put up photos with people or places or exotic animals. I have a photo with a tiger that I got clicked in Thailand and I do know a lot of people are jealous. But it doesn’t matter,” he laughs.

But not everyone puts up photos to brag, as avid traveller and city designer Shivali Singh says, “My dad has a shipping business, and so I’ve been travelling since I was 4-months old. I’ve travelled to such beautiful places that talking about them doesn’t do any justice, so I just take photos and put them up. I want my friends to also see all these beautiful places.”

So is that all to braggies? Bragging about it? Businessman Prabhu Kothari, who deals with fire safety equipment and who loves to travel, believes it is much more than that. “It’s all about your perception. I upload photos so that my friends can be more informed about places they might visit. It works as a guide and they know in advance what to expect from places they haven’t visited. So in a way, they learn through my experiences. If you think I’m bragging so be it, but I’m just putting it up to share with family and friends.”

Like Prabhu, IT professional from the city Neelima Paruchuri too has a different take. She believes that ‘braggies’ are much more appealing, “I have nothing against selfies, but there is not much it can offer. When it comes to photos like these, you have a scenic background. So apart from a person, there are a lot more elements to the photo and that’s what clicks for me.”
