North-East demands 2 lakh red roses for Valentine's Day
Shillong: People in the north eastern region will gift an estimated 200,000 exotic red roses to their loved ones in the Valentine's Day on Friday.
"There is a demand of over 200,000 red roses in flower shops all over north east on February 14 this year. We (his company) are filling about one-fourth of that market demand," Rajesh Shah, Managing Director of Zopar Exports, a city-based leading rose producer in the region, told PTI.
He said his firm's flowers retail shops in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram received demands of over 50,000 'exotic reds' on the Valentine's Day alone. On an average day, eight north eastern states consume about 15,000 flower varieties.
A bunch of about 10-15 buds of exotic red roses would be sold in the price range of Rs 200-250 in the region on Friday while one rose bud would cost Rs 30 in Guwahati and Rs 20 elsewhere, Shah said.
The flower wholesalers were importing flowers from Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad to meet the high demand as the cold weather condition in the region has hit the local rose production badly, another rose grower said.
