Student, 21, attempts suicide after ‘ragging’
Hyderabad: A 21-year-old pharmaceutical student attempted suicide by consuming anti-hypertensive tablets after he was allegedly ragged by drunk engineering students at the MLR Pharmaceutical College in Dundigal. The attackers have not yet been identified.
Ch. Sravan Kumar, a B. Pharma III student from Nizamabad, was also beaten up in public by the trio when he refused to obey them.
“Sravan was walking to the bus stop near the college when the engineering students confronted him. They were in an inebriated condition, and mistook him to be a fresher and started questioning him rudely. When he refused to respond, they abused him and beat him up,” said a student from the college.
The MLR College management denied it was ragging and said that both Sravan and the attackers were in the third year. “This was not an incident of ragging. Sravan was beaten up by the drunk engineering students. He got depressed and attempted suicide,” said MLR College secretary M. Rajashekhar Reddy.
However, students said that the pharmaceutical college and the engineering college are different entities though they are on the same campus.
After the incident, Sra-van returned to his rented flat at Maitrivanam and consumed the tablets. His friends found him lying in the room and rushed him to Narayana Hrudayalaya, where his condition is stated to be critical.
Dundigal police booked a case, and started an investigation. “We are trying to identify the attackers with the help of witnesses. Arrests would be made soon,” said Dundigal inspector Ch Balakrishna.
The victim’s teacher, Shyam Sunder, said that Sravan’s father had passed away and his mother is ill. He was staying with his friends in a rented flat in the city.
