Chief priest of Badrinath shrine arrested for molesting pregnant woman

New Delhi: The chief priest Keshavan Namboodiri of the famous Badrinath shrine in Uttarakhand was arrested for allegedly confining and molesting a pregnant woman in a city hotel here and sent on Tuesday to 14 days of judicial custody by a Delhi court.

According to police, the incident took place on Monday at around 4:30 PM when a 28-year-old woman had gone to meet him at the hotel.

Besides Namboodiri, one of his associates Vishnu Prasad was arrested from the spot daon Monday and were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Shreya Arora Mehta who remanded them to judicial custody till February 18 after the police did not seek their custodial interrogation.

The police also told the court that the two were drunk at the time of arrest. They further said the duo's custody were not required because they have already seized the case property and no more accused was to be arrested in the case.

"Their identity is not in dispute," the police said.

Delhi Police also told the court that the accused were apprehended from a hotel in Mehrauli area of south Delhi.

The accused were booked under section 342 (wrongful confinement) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC.

"The woman's father knew Namboodiri as he owned a hotel in Badrinath. Yesterday afternoon, he called her and said he wants to meet her. She initially refused but later went to meet him along with her driver.

"According to her complaint, when the woman reached Namboodiri's hotel room, she saw that there were cigarette buts and the place smelt of liquor. Vishnu Prasad was also there.

"Namboodiri asked Prasad to go out and shut the door. When she sat on a chair in the room, he tried to inappropriately touch her, following which she came out of the room and reached the police station with the help of her driver," a senior police official said.

Namboodiri was suspended as the chief priest of the famous shrine soon after confirmation of the news about his arrest, Badri-Kedar Temple Committee chief Ganesh Godiyal said.

"Till the time he is cleared of the charges in a court of law, Nayab Rawal V C Ishwara Prasad will function as the chief priest of the temple," he said.

New Delhi: An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman on the pretext of providing her a job, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Raman Swami, was arrested on January 25. He was sent to judicial custody till February 8.

As per the complainant, the woman had met Swami, a resident of Harikesh Nagar in south Delhi, recently and requested him to help her get employment.

"The woman told us that Swami then asked her to meet him in Okhla area. When she reached there, he took the woman to a house in his car and raped her and threatened her not to reveal the incident to anybody," a police official said.

The woman, however, reported the incident to the police. She was sent for medical examination which confirmed rape after which Swami was arrested, police said. Swami joined AAP before Delhi assembly elections last year and had also sought a ticket from Okhla constituency.

IT firm's acting MD accused of harassing woman employee Hyderabad, Feb 4 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman employee of a local IT firm has accused the company's acting Managing Director of harassing her, police on Tuesday said.

She has lodged a complaint with Banjara Hills Police here in this regard alleging the acting MD, Parameshwar Rao, forced her to watch obscene videos with him at the work place, they said. Based on the complaint, police have booked Rao, who is absconding, on the chrge of outraging the modesty of a woman.

Hyderabad: A 23-year-old woman employee of a local IT firm has accused the company's acting Managing Director of harassing her, police on Tuesday said.

Tamluk(WB): Trinamool Congress leader and deputy pradhan of Nandigram Block II of East Midnapore district Samar Maiti was shot dead by gunmen Tuesday night, police sources said.

Maiti was returning home from the local market when the attackers fired at him, the sources said.

He was taken to Tamluk Hospital but the hospital authorities referred him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata as his condition was serious.

Maiti succumbed to his injuries while arrangements were being made to shift him to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, police said. Superintendent of Police Sukesh Jain said police has launched a hunt to nab the miscreants who fired at Maiti.

Bankura (WB): A court here in Bankura district has sentenced to death an occultist, who beheaded a baby and drank the child's blood as a ritual two-years ago.

Describing it as a rarest of the rare case, the fast track court of Sulagna Dastidar (Chhataraj) held the occultist Lakhikanta Karmakar guilty and awarded him capital punishment Monday.

According to prosecution, people of Kalakuri village under Saltora police station found Karmakar with the baby's head on January 29, 2012, at a Kali temple near a graveyard.

At about 11 AM, the occultist was found performing rituals and drinking blood dripping from the severed head. Locals then beat him up and handed him over to the police.

As none filed any complaint, the police started a suo motu case. Altogether 17 witnesses deposed in the case.

Amritsar: BSF personnel seized 20 kg of heroin valued Rs 100 crore in the international market after an encounter with smugglers on the Indo-Pak border in Punjab's Amritsar district, officials said.

BSF's night patrolling party on observing suspicious movements at Border Out Post Verowal opened fire at the smugglers in the wee hours, who also retaliated by firing gun shots.

However, taking advantage of fog, the smugglers fled and during search of the area, 20 packets of the contraband were recovered near the border security fencing, a BSF official said.

Thane: A 35-year-old man allegedly strangulated to death his second wife with whom he had frequent quarrels as he had kept her in dark about his first marriage, police said on Tuesday.

Atul Burman, of Kalher in Bhiwandi township of Thane district, had tied the knot with Lata (27) sometime back without informing her that he was already married, Narpoli police station sub-inspector Manohar Awhad said.

Later, when Lata got to know about Atul being already married, the couple used to have frequent fights over the issue. Frustrated with the domestic quarrels, Atul strangulated his wife to death on Sunday night and fled, police said.

The accused has been booked under section 302 (murder) of the IPC, police said, adding a manhunt has been launched to nab him.

Azamgarh: An elderly man was allegedly killed in accidental firing at a marriage function in Manikpur village in Tehbarpur area here, police saidon Tuesday.

60-year-old Bhuwal Ram was injured after a bullet hit him when he was attending the marriage function last night, they said.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he died during treatment, police said. The police is probing the matter and trying to ascertain from where the bullet came, they said, adding that no arrests have been made so far in this connection.

Jaipur: Two men, running a cricket betting racket, were arrested and a cash of Rs 39,630 along with some latest electronic gadgets was recovered from Vaishali Nagar area here, police said on Tuesday. The accused were arrested Monday from Chitrakoot area, they said.

Two laptops, a printer, a calculator, TV monitors, voice recorder, 47 mobile handsets, 17 chargers, one charger box, three data card, two remotes, four registers and a diary were recovered from them, the police said. The duo was booked under various sections of IPC for gambling and cheating people, they said.

The accused identified as Vikram Rajpal and Jaiprakash hailing from Churu were produced before a local court which sent them to three days of police custody, Investigating Officer Dalveer Singh said.

They have been involved in cricket betting for many years, and on the day of raid they werebetting for 20/20 match being played between England and Australia, Singh said.
