Quick thinking helps save 12-yr-old’s hand
Hyderabad: Quick thinking by the family members of a 12-year-old girl, whose hand was cut off just above the wrist by accident, helped reimplant it.
Thanishka’s severed hand was put in a clean plastic bag and filled with ice cubes to stop decay and she was rushed to the hospital.
Thanishka’s arm had got trapped and severed in the elevator at her home in Ameerpet. The girl, along with the severed hand, was immediately sent by the doctors at Prime Hospital to the operation theatre. A marathon eight-hour surgery followed, wherein the bone was fixed and the veins, arteries and tendons repaired.
Dr Sathis Reddy, senior orthopaedic surgeon and director of the hospital, explained, “The most important aspect is to get the blood circulation established within six hours of amputation. We could do that, and, hence the limb has survived in its entirety.”
Plastic surgeon Dr Anurag Chitranshi said, “The amputated arm came in a neat and clean condition and that was the biggest advantage as we could put the two together. The child was very co-operative and despite the accident, she was calm and allowed all the surgical procedures, which worked to her advantage.”
