Rush for Rajya Sabha tickets a worry for Congress

Congress's key allies are now shying away while own party leaders are playing it safe.

New Delhi: Tremors are being felt in the Congress as not merely its allies have begun making noises, but some sections of its rank and file appear to be conceding defeat even before the real battle for the Lok Sabha has taken off.

Besides the RJD and the LJP, no other key regional party appears keen to strike a pre-poll pact with the Congress. On the other hand, existing allies like the NCP and the National Conference in J&K are keeping the Congress on tenterhooks.

The Congress high command seems to have virtually surrendered before its “managers” in nominations to the Rajya Sabha and appears to lack the “killer instinct” in the fight against the BJP and its PM candidate Narendra Modi, fear party insiders.

AICC general secretaries Digvijay Singh and Madhusudan Mistry and sitting MPs Kumari Selja and Sanjay Singh have declined to contest the general election and secured Rajya Sabha tickets under various pretexts, they claim.

The insiders don’t really blame these leaders, but wonder why Sonia Gandhi and vice-chief Rahul Gandhi allowed it.
