Baby boy delivered on plane

The Kadapa woman and the little one to leave for their hometown after being treated at a city hospital.

Chennai: A Kadapa resident, Radha Subramani (37), delivered a baby boy on board the Kuwait Airways flight that reached Chennai airport from Kuwait at 4.30 am on Wednesday. Airport sources said the woman, experienced labour pains around 3 am on board the plane.

“The airhostesses immediately alerted two medical practitioners on board and facilitated a separate place for the woman by requesting the male passengers to move to other seats. The lady, who was accompanied by her brother Ramanaiah, delivered a male child at around 3.50 am. The mother and child are doing well,” the sources added.

However, authorities directed the woman and child to go to a private clinic in the city, where they were admitted initially and later discharged and sent to hometown Kadapa in an ambulance. Hospital sources said the mother and the child were healthy.

It may be noted that usually airlines allow only women up to 26 weeks of pregnancy to travel by air.

But an industry source said if a woman was keen to return home during advanced stage of pregnancy, then she has to sign a form agreeing to take full responsibility for anything that happens mid-air.
