Saina looks to step it up in 2014
New Delhi: After a “frustrating” 2013, Saina Nehwal sent out an ominous warning to her rivals at the beginning of the new season, clinching the Syed Modi India International Grand Prix women’s singles crown at the expense of compatriot and world no. 11 P.V. Sindhu in straight games last week.
It was her first international title in 15 months since the 2012 Denmark Open. For Saina, the win was “unbelievable” as it ended a long wait which had seen her slump in form as well as ranking.
“It was special as it was a comeback, and wasn’t easy. I had to beat some top names including Sindhu to lift the title.
“Definitely, it’s a big boost going into a tough season,” the Hyderabadi shuttler told this paper on Tuesday.
Owing to a winless 2013 — which the shuttler blamed on a spate of injuries — Saina has slipped to world no. 9 from being ranked second in June. However, last week’s win will allow her to climb the ranking ladder.
But the 23-year-old said more than the rankings, she would focus on her fitness this season.
“That will be the way to win tournaments,” the shuttler said.
And for this, she has already chalked out plans with national coach Pullela Gopichand. “It is an important year as the Asian and Commonwealth Games are lined up.
“And these events are scheduled for two-three weeks, where we have to play both individual and team events. So it will be very important to keep fit, not only physically but mentally.
“Mentally, there is no problem..that is my strong point. But physically I have to stay fit throughout. I have already started working on it, besides my on court movements and strokeplay. Also I have changed a few things about the way I train, which have already started showing results,” she said.
Saina, who trains for six to seven hours everyday, said she had learnt her lessons from last year and hoped that she did not “repeat the same mistakes again”.
“Unlike the last few years, this season I will only be playing the big tournaments including the Superseries events. That will help me get enough rest and stay fit for the year.”
Ahead of the CWG in July, Saina will be in action in a few events starting with the All England Championships from March 4 to 9. Having lost to Thai teen Ratchanok Intanon in the semi-finals last year, the Indian ace will definitely aim to go a step further this time around.
