IIIT to make Kakinada education hub

Pallam Raju unveils foundation stone, GMR MD in attendance.

Kakinada: The Kakinada region is poised to become an industrial and educational hub of the state with the establishment of the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Kakinada (IIIT-K) in East Godavari district.

That was the belief of many industrialists who participated in a programme in JNTU-K sports grounds on the occasion of unveiling the foundation stone for the IIIT, to be established in Thondngi mandal.

The project will cost '180 crore and come up on 100 acre of land. Union human resources development minister M.M. Pallam Raju did the honours.

Speakers participating in the programme on Monday were confident that the East Godavari and Kakinada region has the potential and human resources to grow and become one of the best developed regions in the country.

GMR Group Business chairman and managing director B.V. Nageswara Rao said that the IIIT-Kakinada would serve as the growth engine for the development of not only the region, but also Andhra Pradesh, through the Kakinada Special Economic Zone and Coastal Corridor.

He also said that the Indian economy was in good shape in spite of the global slowdown, but now it is facing challenges. These can be overcome through the vast potential of human resources, hoped Nageswara Rao.

JNTU-K Vice-Chancellor G. Tulasi Ram Das said that Kakinada has already become an educational hub with several engineering colleges with excellent research labs, and it will soon become an industrial hub as well.

Inspira chairman and managing director Prakas Jain said that the IIIT-Kakinada would emerge as one of the most prestigious educational institutes in the country.

District collector Neethu Kumari Prasad, Kakinada rural MLA K. Kannababu, Chaitanya Group managing director Sashikumar Varma, additional secretary of the Union ministry for HRD, Anitha Sharma also spoke on the occasion and expressed confidence in IIIT-Kakinada’s ability to develop the region.
