ITIR needs 100m gallon water
Hyderabad: Millions of gallons of water, which will be required daily to cater to the processing and non-processing units in the proposed Information Technology Investment Region cannot be met from any one source.
Auditing firm Pricewa-terhouseCoopers’ preliminary studies have put the tentative requirement at 100 million gallons of water daily to the ITIR region, which would be spread over 202 km.
Water Board officials said though the Krishna Phase-III would bring an additional 90 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) and the Godavari Phase-I another 172 MGD, water cannot be supplied to the ITIR region from one single source due to its location.
“Water has to be supplied from all the three main sources of Krishna, Singur and Godavari. While the ITIR region on Cyberabad side has to be given supplies from Singur, Manjira and Krishna, supplies towards Uppal, Pocharam and Ghatkesar will have to be made from Godavari and Krishna water schemes,” Water Board engineering-in-chief M. Satyanarayana told DC.
Preliminary studies have revealed that the laying of water and sewerage infrastructure cost for the ITIR region will be around Rs 7,500 crore. As per the report of Pricewater-houseCoopers, 99 MGD of water will be required for the purpose of “processing and non-processing” by the industries, IT companies and various other manufacturing units. About 100 MGD will be required for drinking and non-drinking purposes by ITIR region alone.
Water Board officials said they would be able to meet the water demand for the ITIR region because the entire 100 MGD would not be required at one go. “The ITIR region will require about 25 MGD from 2018 and the demand will go up to 100 MGD by 2030. By then, Godavari Phase-I will be commissioned. If needed, we will bring forward Godavari Phase-II to bring in another 172 MGD to the city,” a senior official said.
Presently, the demand for water in Greater Hyde-rabad alone is for 480 MGD against the supplies of 345 MGD. The projected demand for water by 2018 is 600 MGD excluding 100 MGD for ITIR region.
“The city will get an additional 90 MGD from Krishna Phase-III and another 172 MGD from Godavari Phase-I by the end of 2014 itself, taking total daily supplies to 607. So, we are confident of executing Godavari-Phase-II and meet the water demands of the ITIR region,” a senior official said.
