'Jai Ho' saved by single screens

The film’s opening was good, but not phenomenal for a Salman starrer

'Jai Ho' did not have a roaring start at the box office. The opening was overall good, if not phenomenal, which means no records were created or broken — as expected of all Salman Khan’s films. However, the film is looking at a good total. Single screens opening was pretty much as expected, around 80 per cent footfalls. However, at multiplexes, a 60-70 per cent opening was expected, but the footfalls were restricted to around 50 per cent. Much can also be attributed to the lack of chartbuster music as well as a new leading heroine. Since the film’s promos gave an impression of it being an action film, the family audience decided to adopt a wait and watch approach. As a result, Salman’s 'Dabangg 2' record of Rs 22 crore first day was intact as Jai Ho raked in Rs 17.5 crore on Friday. Saturday collections stood at Rs 16.25 crore.

The film did have a healthy Saturday and Sunday though, as a result of which the overall weekend collections were in Rs 55-60 crore* range. While Rs 100 crore is obviously on the cards, it would all boil down to how sustained are the collections in second week (where 'One by Two' is the only new release) for the film to come closer to the Rs 150 crore mark.
