Talking about Alia Bhatt, Rahman says, “I always like to make the actors sing their own songs if I feel that they have the potential. When director Imtiaz Ali told me that Alia has a good voice, I immediately heard her and she sang with ease. Therefore, we decided to make her sing in Highway.” He adds, “This trend of making actors sing is a regular practice in the West.”
“Alia has a fresh and happening voice. She has sung the song meticulously. I am sure that with regular practice she can improve on her vocals,” adds the maestro.
Not many know that Rahman loves to sing Punjabi songs too. “Yes, I love the Punjabi language. The songs in Punjabi are foot tapping and alluring. I love Punjabi bol (lyrics) and have sung a few lines in Punjabi in Highway too,” says Rahman, adding on a lighter note, “I give chance to new singers but I will not miss out on singing my own songs.”
For a South Indian, Punjabi must have been tough, but Rahman says, “Music has no language barrier. And my love for music helps me fulfill all my wishes. Maybe I will sing in other languages too at some point of time.”
However, when we ask him to sing a few lines in Punjabi, he says, “Aproma padhla (perhaps later),” and signs off.
