Kochi: Churchill Brothers clin-ched their maiden Federation Cup title with a masterful 3-1 win over neighbours Sporting Clube de Goa at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi on Saturday.

The performance against the familiar opposition was domineering, purposeful and one that promises a renaissance in their present run of form in the I-League.

And meanwhile, a tailor should be busy stitching Balwant Singh’s India cap, for he has done whatever is required to earn it. The striker scored Churchill’s opener, his fourth in five matches.

The dynamic Abdelhamid Shabana’s pile driver and Alesh Sawant’s lucky tap in were result of planned execution from the red machines while Victorino Fernandes netted once, though with little impact on the result, for Sporting.

It is unlikely that Balwant will ever score an easier goal. Sporting’s ability to defend as a team was creditable in their semi-final victory over Dempo, but unmistakably at fault for the opener
