Pak cheat offers Rs 1 lakh to banker
Adilabad: A fraudster claiming to be a resident of Pakistan offered Rs 1 lakh to the manager of a bank here to prevent him from stopping a ‘lucky lottery winner’ from depositing Rs 2.80 lakh into the account to claim the fake Rs 1 crore lottery prize.
Gangs are collecting the phone numbers of consumers and sending them SMSes saying that they had won Rs 1 crore from lottery. They would then lure the victims into depositing huge amounts to claim the lottery money.
Bank staffers say that they find out about such incidents only after the money has been deposited into the accounts of the fake callers.
A bank manager said the Pakistan caller associated with the fake lottery had threatened him for trying to restrain the gullible “lottery winner” from depositing Rs 2.80 lakh after the customer told the Pakistani that the bank manager was preventing him from depositing the amount. The customer had already deposited Rs 80,000 into the account given by the caller.
The manager said, “The caller asked me to take Rs 1 lakh from the Rs 2.80 lakh, and deposit the remaining into his account, but I refused to do so.”
So," adding that the bank had encountered three such incidents including that of a lady government teacher and two local businessman in the last two months.
Sources said that many such incidents have been taking place in most commercial banks but were not coming to light as bankers deposit the money as a regular bank transactions and bank staff do not file police complaints nor report the matter to their higher ups to avoid risk of getting involved.
Bank employees say that they found the phone numbers used by fake callers switched off when they tried to contact them. Bankers say that police should create awareness among the people about such fraudulent messages and phone calls coming from abroad and within the country.

Kozhikode: The ATM fund misappropriation detected in Kannur on Friday exposes the involvement of criminal gangs in agencies that handle ATM cash replenishment.
It may be recalled that two persons of an agency hired for filling ATMs siphoned off around Rs 2.5 crore from leading banks over a period of two years. Though the agencies say that they conduct a police verification prior to the appointment of their staff, the Kannur incident exposes the lacunae in the system.
The banks say that it is the responsibility of the agencies to ensure that the amount is deposited in the ATMs and that if there is any misappropriation, they would have to compensate the banks. In the Kannur case, the agency has paid back the lost amount to the banks. In the above case, the agency employees manipulated the system and siphoned off the cash.
But experts say there are chances of the employees stealing some bundles and keeping fake currency bundles. “If the employees exchange the originals with fake ones en route, it is difficult to detect it,” the general manager of a cash replenishment agency in Kozhikode said.
The ATMs are the property of the banks and their security is the banks’ responsibility. If the ATMs could count the cash, check their genuineness and notify the bank through an automated message, such frauds could be curtailed to a great extent.
“We do not have such ATMs at present. Now the agency employees manually enter the amount deposited in the system. There is also no mechanism to check the genuineness of the notes deposited,” the GM said.
