Acai berry is great for the immune system, has anti-ageing properties, cleanses the colon and eases inflammation as well.

There are berries and then there’s the acai berry (pronounced as a,sa’i). These little wonders have been constantly in the news thanks to their benefits, disadvantages, false claims and other controversies.

Available in different forms like powder, juice, pulp and as freeze-dried products, these dark berries are packed with a dozen different flavonoids-like compounds, one of them being resveratrol.

Research has shown that the acai berry is a small wonder and the anti-oxidant capacity of its pulp is higher than other fruits like mango, strawberry and grapes. Anti-oxidants attack the free radicals and prevent oxidative damage in the body.

The berries can protect against heart disease and cancer as well. Few extensive studies have cited that they aid in colon cleansing too.

Acai berry extracts and oil are used in many beauty products as when the oil is processed, its antioxidant-capacity still remains high, thus acting as an anti-ageing agent. However, due to lack of evidence and adequate research, the berry’s weight-loss effects are yet to be proven.

Another merit of acai berry is that it improves metabolism. Few animal-based studies have quoted that it helps boost the immune system and also eases inflammation.

There is, however, no accurate or recommended dosage of acai berry and experts thus recommend that it be consumed in moderate amounts till all its secrets are laid bare to the world.
