Congress greybeards: Buck up or face single-digit Lok Sabha haul
Bangalore: Will the Congress be weighed down by the state government’s lackadaisical performance in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections? Citing a complete “disconnect” between the government and the people, senior leaders have reportedly informed central leaders that the party would find it difficult to cross double digits in terms of the Lok Sabha in the coming elections.
“The citizens should feel the arrival of a new government. Unfortunately, this has not happened in the last seven months. Both urban and rural areas have not felt any change. Since there was very high expectation among people, they seem to be disillusioned with the government,” sources in the party quoted these leaders as telling the high command.
Besides, most ministers were clueless about their responsibilities and the fact that they should respond to the aspirations of people. They were merely banking on populist schemes to fetch votes for the party in the coming elections, the sources added.
The sources said CongrÂess general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Digvijay Singh was given a similar feedback by these leaders.
The upshot: central leaders have decided to tread with caution while selecting candidates for Lok Sabha polls. The Congress currently holds nine sitting MPs of the 28 parliamentary seats from the state.
