Laptop armed traffic cops tick report card of autos
Chennai: The traffic police are going hi-tech. Policemen, with laptops containing information about autos maintaining a clean record, were seen deployed in Anna Nagar in a maiden innovative effort on Friday.
Doing away with the hassle of taking stacks of papers mentioning details of the autos, the police used laptops that contained the data. Officials said, “The step is part of the ongoing efforts to stamp red stickers on autos.” Autos with red stickers are the ones maintaining a clean record in the past two years.
The drive is aimed at making it easier for commuters to choose a better auto and for auto drivers to fall in line and obey rules. An officer said, “Three thousand such autos were identified as per data from the Transport Department. We check the autos based on this and the corresponding data on our laptop, and give them the stickers.”
Selvaraj, an auto driver in Thirivanmiyur, said, “It is a good step. It appreciates those drivers who have been honest in their work. And other erring divers are trying to mend their ways.”
