Inter-state ATM thieves arrested in Kerala
Kozhikode: The Medical College police on Friday arrested a three member ATM burglary gang that is suspected to have been involved in more than 50 similar cases across Kerala and also outside.
The police have also issued a central circular notifying their arrest so that they could get information regarding similar cases they were involved in outside the state.
The police team picked up Rahul Raj, 28, Chandan Singh Munda, 26, both hailing from Orissa and Rabbani Khan, a native of Gaya, Bihar when they were found moving suspiciously around an ATM near Medical College area. The police have also recovered Rs 58,000 from the trio.
The gang adopted a similar modus operandi in all their thefts. They used a toothpick to block the ATM cash dispenser and when the customer was anxious about what happened they would enter the ATM as if to help and decamp with the money.
The police got a tip-off regarding the activities of this gang in Kozhikode when Madathil Suresh Babu lost Rs 40,000 from at an ATM in Kottooli.
Suresh Babu had given a description regarding the suspects and had told the police that they were North Indians. The Medical College police then formed a special team headed by Circle Inspector Ullasam and sub inspector Sasidharan Chalil and civil police officers Babu Manakadavu, Saju Palath and Sreejish as team members.
They took the call list of mobile phones from the tower there and started probing each number with the help of the Cybercell. Even as the investigation was on, there was a similar ATM theft reported at Panniyankara adopting the same modus operandi.
Police then collected the call records from the Panniyankara mobile towers also and found some numbers they got from Kottooli matched with the ones they have got from Panniyankara. Police then zeroed in on these numbers and found out that the gang was hailing from Orissa.
The police team went to Orissa in search of the culprits but could not trace them. The investigation then hit a roadblock till a similar case was reported in Peroorkada, Trivandrum.
“They used to come to Kerala and stay here for 10 – 15 days. They would strike at various locations and go back. During their present visit they had carried out at least 17 such thefts in areas like Trivandrum, Kollam and other areas,” a senior police official said.
