Now party may declare verdict

Pressure to publish internal probe report on TP case.

Thiruvananthapuram: Now that the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case verdict is out, pressure is mounting on CPM general secretary Prakash Karat to make public the findings of the party’s much-publicised internal probe into the incident.

Soon after the murder, Karat had stated that those found guilty by the party’s internal probe would not have a place in the organisation. Even at routine press briefings held over the last one year, he used to state that the internal probe was on but refused to divulge the details saying the matter was sub judice.

Many say that with the matter no longer sub judice, at least till the parties concerned go in for appeal in a higher court, it is time for Karat to fulfil his promise. Everyone, including Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan, is keen to know the fate of the in-house probe.

Interestingly, the PB communiqué released shortly after the verdict on Wednesday parroted state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan’s stand that P. Mohanan’s acquittal had absolved the party of the conspiracy charge.

The statement, which was silent on the conviction of three CPM leaders, craftily mentioned: “The Kerala state committee will take appropriate decision after going through the judgment.’’
Politburo member M.A. Baby told DC: “We cannot specify everything. We have asked the state committee to look into various aspects of the judgment and take suitable decision.’’

When asked whether the PB direction also meant disciplinary action, he said: “This is only for taking appropriate decision on the judgment. Disciplinary action will be decided after the internal inquiry of the party.’’ He, however, refused to say anything on the possibilities of the party going in for appeal against the conviction. “All such matters will be decided by the state committee,’’ he added.
