Ready to give up Rajya Sabha seat for alliance: M Karunanidhi
Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday indicated that his party would not be averse to sacrificing Rajya Sabha berth to stitch up an alliance with Vijayakanth’s DMDK.
When reporters sought his reaction to an idea floated from DMDK quarters that the two parties could come together for LS polls if the DMK sacrificed RS seat to them, Karunanidhi said, “Alliance talks had not happened between Vijayakanth led DMDK and the DMK so far. If the talks happen, the opinion stated by you will also be considered.
Asked if he would seek DMDK’s support for the RS poll, he said, “wait and see”. However, Karunanidhi said a categorical no to mustering Congress support for the biennial RS poll. When media persons suggested that he could directly invite DMDK for alliance, the DMK chief said, “Our invitation has been made in an appropriate manner.”
Welcoming the Supreme Court judgement commuting death penalty of the four Veerappan associates among 15 convicts, Karunanidhi said that he would rejoice if a similar ruling were made for the three convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case also.
Reiterating that he was opposed to death sentence for long, Karunanidhi expressed happiness over the SC verdict. Asked if the verdict would apply to the three Rajiv case convicts on death row, he said, “I would rejoice if the sentence suits them also.”
Death row convicts in Rajiv murderr case, Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan have also sought commutation of their sentence citing the 11-year delay in acting on their mercy pleas, which were turned down in 2011.
