Congress opens Council door to Parameshwar
Bangalore: After much deliberation, the Congress high command may clear the appointment of KPCC president Dr G. Parameshwar to the Legislative Council, opening the door to a possible induction of the SC leader as the Deputy Chief Minister in the coming weeks.
Speculation that the KPCC chief who has the ear of the Congress central leaders may get a greater say in the state arose after he flew to New Delhi to discuss his possible nomination to the Legislative Council, which leaves him one step short of a much sought after cabinet slot.
The party is likely to nominate Dr Parameshwar to the Legislative Council under the 'nomination' category, to the seat lying vacant following the resignation of lone Muslim MLC from the BJP, Dr Mumtaz Ali Khan who quit to join the Congress.
The party felt the need to accommodate Dr Parameshwar in a bid to balance the caste combination. By nominating him to the council ahead of key Lok Sabha polls, the party will boost the morale of 'original' Congressmen besides sending a clear signal to Scheduled Castes that the party protects their interests.
AICC general secretary in charge for Karnataka, Digvijay Singh however remained non-committal on Parameshwar's induction as deputy chief minister, telling reporters in New Delhi: “It’s news to me. I do not know about appointing him as DCM. You better ask Dr Parameshwar himself.”
