Sporting makes it to semis in Fed Cup
Manjeri: Rangdajied FC’s Federation Cup hopes ended as Sporting Club de Goa defeated the Meghalaya team, 2-0, in the Group ‘B’ match here on Monday.
Second half goals by Boima Karpeh and Victorino Fernandes helped Sporting Club de Goa to find their second win in the tournament. The Goan side had defeated East Bengal but lost to Bengaluru FC in their earlier matches.
Chances came aplenty for Rangdajied United FC in the first half but their forwards fumbled in front of goal. North Korean Kim Song Yong started the flurry of misses in the ninth minute as he headed a crisp cross from left-wing but the ball rested on top of the net. In the very next minute, their Brazilian striker Edmar Figueira miserably failed to fire when had only goalie to beat.
Sporting had their first attack on goal when Kalu Ogba’s shot flew just over the woodwork. Rangdajied United almost scored the opener in the 30th minute, but Sporting Custodian Ravi Kumar parried away a header by Kim.
A blunder by Randajied custodian Surjay Pariyar gifted Sporting the lead in the 54th minute as he misjudged a left-winged lob from Boima Karpeh. Just two minutes after the goal, Victorino Fernandes sent a shot into the back of the net but the goal was denied as the linesman raised offside flag.
