Give Telengana without conditions: Akbaruddin Owaisi

The MIM leader also warns not to support the Telengana Bill if special powers are not withdrawn.

Hyderabad: At the ongoing Assembly session, Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen’s floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi welcomed the Centre’s decision to carve out Telangana state but warned that his party would oppose the Telangana Bill if the Centre did not withdraw the special powers it proposed to give the Governor over several issues in the joint capital.

Continuing his speech for the second day on Tuesday, Owaisi said his party president and MP Asaduddin Owaisi would propose amendments regarding the common capital for 10 years, retaining a common High Court and giving the Governor powers in police and revenue matters.

“A situation may come where the commissioners of police of Hyderabad and Cyberabad become more powerful than the elected government of Telangana and its chief minister,”?he said.

Should law and order come under the Governor, the police could become the de facto government, he cautioned.

The Majlis leader said he feared that communal forces would gain the upper hand in Telangana, and if such forces come to power at the Centre as well, it was important to retain law and order with the elected government of Telangana. “There will be no guarantee for lives of people like me if communal forces are allowed to dominate the administration,”?he said.

Unlike other members who have spoken in the debate, the Majlis leader proposed amendments clause wise.

The MIM proposed 31 amendments to the Bill, including separate High Courts for the two states from day one and also separate public service commissions.

The Majlis leader continued to taunt the Telugu Desam for its eagerness in allying with the BJP. He demanded that Naidu should state openly that he is in alliance with the BJP.

When BJP member Y. Lakshminarayana tried to counter Owaisi, the latter wondered if the BJP is still committed to Telangana.
