New Delhi: Goa-India made a winning start to the volleyball competition of the 3rd Lusofonia Games with both the men’s and women’s teams defeating their opponents

in Panaji on Monday.

The men had to struggle a bit before beating Mozam-bique 2-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-10). Although the scoreline indicates that they won the opening set easily, they were made to work hard by the Mozambique spikers.

The Africans lifted their game in the second set to claw their way back into the game. But the hosts simply decimated their opponents in the third and final set to seal the issue.

The women spikers, on the other hand, totally dominated Macau, beating them 25-16, 25-10, 25-10.

In football, Sri Lanka will aim to seal a semi-final berth when they play their last Group A league match against Sao Tome on Tuesday. With two teams qualifying from each group, Sri Lanka need a draw against Sao Tome to qualify for the semi-finals.
