St. Andrews wins football tourney
St Andrews School, Bowenpally, emerged the winners of the 10th Sachdev Sports inter-school football tournament, organised by the Shastri Soccer Club at the Trimulgherry Village Ground in Secunderabad.
St Andrews locked horns with Bhavan’s Ramakrishnapuram in the final and after regulation time failed to yield a result, the match went into penalties, which St Andrews won 2-1.
In the shootout, both teams missed their respective first shots. While St Andrews missed their second shot as well, Bhavan’s went 1-0 up, thanks to a shot from Mayur which curled into the top-left corner of the goal. Bhavan’s remained in the lead after St Andrews missed their third penalty as well. However, Bhavan’s were unable to double their lead after they missed their fourth shot.
Pradyumna walked up to the spot for St Andrews and with nerves of steel, sent the ball crashing into the goal to pull his side level. Bhavan’s squandered another chance to go ahead by missing their final shot while Bharath, who took the penalty for St Andrews, didn’t miss to help his team win the championship.
Vishruth of St Andrew’s was adjudged the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ of the tournament while Naresh, also of St Andrews, was named ‘Best Defender’. Sai Ram of Bhavan’s Ramakrishna-puram, won the ‘Best Midfielder’ award and the ‘Best Striker’ award went to Kiran of Goverment High School.
